Honey gets the attention. Beeswax gets the candles. Propolis? It’s often the sticky stuff a beekeeper has to work through to lift a hive lid.
But that resinous material has a story of its own—and it’s the ingredient at the heart of our Beekeeper’s Buddy and Propolis Protect Lip Balm.
What is propolis?
Honey bees gather resins from tree buds and other plant surfaces, then work them together with wax and their own secretions to make propolis. They use it to seal small gaps and coat surfaces inside the hive.
It isn’t honey, and it isn’t simply another name for beeswax. Propolis begins with plants, so its composition, color, and aroma vary with the plants available to the bees.
That connection to the landscape is part of what makes it interesting to us. The propolis we use comes from our Finger Lakes hives and nearby beekeeper friends. We prepare an extract to incorporate it into our balms.
Why use propolis in skin care?
Propolis contains plant-derived compounds, including flavonoids and other polyphenols, that researchers study for their antioxidant activity. In laboratory studies, some of these compounds can help neutralize free radicals—reactive molecules involved in oxidation.
That chemistry makes propolis an interesting ingredient for cosmetic formulas. But propolis varies from source to source, and the extract, amount used, and complete formula all matter. Research on an ingredient is not the same as a test of a finished balm.
For everyday skin care, our focus is straightforward: softness, moisture retention, and a comfortable feel on dry skin and lips. Propolis brings its distinctive plant-resin character to formulas built around oils, butters, and beeswax.
The whole balm matters
Propolis doesn’t do every job in the tin or tube. The ingredients around it are an essential part of why a balm feels good on your skin:
- Plant oils and butters soften. These emollient ingredients help smooth the feel of dry, rough skin and give the balm its glide.
- Beeswax helps hold moisture in. It gives the balm structure and helps form a layer that slows moisture loss from the surface.
- The balance makes it usable. A balm should spread easily, feel comfortable, and fit into your day without requiring an elaborate routine.
An oil-and-wax balm helps retain moisture rather than supplying a drink of water. On hands and body, applying a little after washing, while skin is still slightly damp, can be a useful habit.
Beekeeper’s Buddy: a tin for everyday dry spots
Beekeeper’s Buddy with Finger Lakes NY Propolis combines our propolis with sunflower oil, shea butter, castor oil, beeswax, and vitamin E.
Reach for it when hands, cuticles, elbows, or other dry spots need a little softness. Warm a small amount between your fingertips and massage it into intact skin. Start with less than you think you need; you can always add more.
There’s no added fragrance. The propolis contributes its own light, resinous aroma—a reminder of where this little tin began.
Propolis Protect Lip Balm: the pocket version
Our Propolis Protect Lip Balm pairs locally gathered propolis with beeswax, mango butter, shea butter, and rice bran oil.
The oils and butters help lips feel smooth and supple, while the wax helps the balm stay in place and retain moisture. It comes in a paperboard tube, ready for a coat pocket, desk drawer, or daypack.
Apply a light layer as needed. Keep the tube away from water and excessive heat. And remember: this is a moisturizing lip balm, not an SPF product. Choose a labeled sunscreen lip product when you need sun protection.
A small note about sensitive skin
Natural ingredients can still cause allergies, and propolis can cause contact reactions in some people. Avoid it if you have a known propolis allergy. Try a small amount on a small area of intact skin before broader use, and stop if you notice itching, redness, or swelling. A small-area trial does not guarantee that an allergy won’t develop later.
We love propolis for its connection to the bees, its interesting plant compounds, and the character it brings to these formulas. Paired with a thoughtfully made balm base, it’s part of a simple routine for keeping skin and lips feeling soft and cared for.
